According to estimations the population would have risen to 7,363,782 by 2010. Bogot\u00e1 and its metropolitan area, which includes municipalities such as Ch\u00eda, Cota, Soacha, Cajic\u00e1, La Calera, Madrid, Funza, Mosquera, Tabio, Tenjo and El Rosal, has a population of around 12 million in 2014.<\/p>\n

In terms of land area, Bogot\u00e1 D.C. is the largest city in Colombia, and one of the biggest in Latin America. It figures among the 25 largest cities of the world and is the third-highest capital city in South America at 2,640 metres (8,660 ft) above sea level, after Quito and La Paz. With its many universities and libraries, Bogot\u00e1 has been called “The Athens of South America”. Bogot\u00e1 owns the largest moorland of the world, which is located in the Sumapaz Locality.
